Government of Georgia – Prime Minister's Visits 2012 Year

Prime Minister’s visit to Brazil

On April 13, 2012 the Prime Minister of Georgia, Nika Gilauri, was on a working visit in Brazil.

In Brazil the Prime Minister of Georgia, Nika Gilauri, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Antonio Patriota.

After meeting with the Vice-President of Brazil, Michel Temer, Nika Gilauri pointed out: "It is very important that Brazil is becoming a partner of Georgia. Today Brazil is a global player all over the world, significant is its support to Georgia in the UNO and international organizations. Initial steps are being taken for rapprochement of the countries, economic cooperation is important".

Within the framework of the visit Open Government Partnership (OGP) Summit was held in Brazil, attended by the President of Brazil and U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. The Prime Minister of Georgia, Nika Gilauri, delivered a speech at the summit.

"It is my privilege to represent my country at this conference, to share our experience in fighting corruption, creating transparent institutions and open government. Within a very short period of time, that is 8 years, Gross Domestic Product has increased by 3; poverty has come down from 40% to 10%. Crime rate has considerably decreased. According to the researches conducted in 2011 Georgia today is the safest place in Europe. Our country is a fine example of open government. For the last 8 years Georgia's economic growth and decrease in poverty rate has been the fastest not only in the region but also in the whole world.

We have not found new gold or gas fields, have not changed geographical location. The main formula for success of Georgia is open government, fight against corruption, creation of transparent and efficient institutions. I'll make a concrete example: the number of taxes has been reduced from 21 to 6, and in spite of this the tax yield has increased from 17% to 27%.

One more example - according to the World Bank, International Financial Corporation, for the last years Georgia has been number one reforming country. Many leaders visit us to study the reforms. But we are not going to be satisfied with what has already been achieved.

In 2011 we started implementing a new idea of public service and offered our citizens a completely new service. They are provided with any types of services in one building. I would like to introduce one more initiative to you named "Georgia Reforms and Partnership". We offer to use this web-page to share your reforms and achievements. That will enable us to study more from each other and make headway to achieve success faster and with better knowledge", - noted the Prime Minister of Georgia when delivering a speech at the OGP Summit.

At Ulysses Guimarres Convention Center an exhibition reflecting the reforms carried out in Georgia was opened.

Also a meeting of Nika Gilauri and the President of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete, was held.

In São Paulo Nika Gilauri met with the President of FIESP (Federation of the Industries of the State of São Paulo), Paulo Skaf, Director of FGV (Fundação Getúlio Vargas) International Projects, Antonio Carlos Kfouri Aidar, the President of EMBRAER Commercial Aviation, Paulo Cesar Silva, the President of Federation of Agriculture of the State of São Paulo, Fabio Meirelles, the Governor of São Paulo, Geraldo Alckmin, and the President of FECOMERCIO (Federation for the Trade of Goods and Services of the State of São Paulo), Abram Szajman.
