Government of Georgia – Appearance 2012

Statement by the Prime Minister of Georgia Print Version

Prime Minister of Georgia Vano Merabishvili issued a special statement regarding torture and acts against human dignity at Gldani Penitentiary Facility #8:

"I would like to make a statement on the crimes committed in the penitentiary system and to reinforce the common position of the Government of Georgia on this issue. The crimes committed at Gldani Penitentiary Facility #8 are outrageous. These are acts of torture that violate human dignity. Every individual involved in these crimes, including those involved directly, have either already been arrested or are wanted by the police. All of them will face justice - those who perpetrated, ordered and organized these crimes.

I personally guarantee that - just as we eradicated the use of torture by the police, which in the past was often used as a way to secure confessions and other testimony, but now no such incidents have taken place in the new police force for many years - I will personally ensure the eradication of torture and acts against human dignity in the penitentiary system. I will make sure this job is done."

In addition, the Prime Minister of Georgia has signed the request from the Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance, Khatuna Kalmakhelidze, to accept her resignation.
