We need fresh energy in the economy, not only to create new jobs, but also for Georgian businesses to be much stronger than they are today, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia stated during today's meeting with winemakers and winegrowers.

According to the Head of Government, the fields of viniculture and viticulture are some of the most important areas in this context, as they not only develop agriculture, but also have a far-reaching spillover effect.

"That is why it is critically important to us to start gradually dealing with problems and flaws that can be corrected fast, though we also can discuss systemic issues. The industry is developing well. According to statistics, in excess of 60 million bottles have been exported in the past 9 months, which is a good result. I have vivid memories of 2012-2013, when we were considering about 50,000 tons, but this year's harvest has already yielded about 270,000 tons," the Prime Minister said.

The Head of Government also emphasized the importance of enhancing the quality of Georgian wine.

"Of course, time has come for us to consider quality. We all understand that the quality of Georgian wine stems from the quality of the farmer and the vineyard, which is very important, among other things. I understand that there are many problems, but a pragmatic, objective, and result-oriented approach will leave virtually no problem unsolved," Giorgi Gakharia underlined.

In addition, on the Prime Minister's decision, a new format will be created for effective communication with winemakers.

"We do not need endless talks about some plans. Concrete problems and concrete ways to solve them are the only goals of this meeting. Also, we absolutely must discuss harvest. Although it seems that we have been able to handle it, it has been a complicated and uneven process, with particular issues still unanswered, and we will discuss what we are doing to respond. We understand that market diversification and quality enhancement are key. The 2020 state budget includes more than 9,000,000 GEL for marketing programs, and that also requires consideration, where this amount should be channeled. In a word, winemaking is one of the priority areas, and not just for the economy. It is part of our cultural identity. And I want you to be blunt about where you see problems and where you need help, and then I will tell you where we see opportunities for a breakthrough, and where we can be even more effective," Giorgi Gakharia said.
