Prime Minister’s Visit to Brussels

On December 1-2, 2008, Prime Minister of Georgia Grigol Mgaloblishvili was on a visit in Brussels. While on a visit in Brussels, Grigol Mgaloblishvili met with Mr. Javier Solana, the General Secretary of the European Council and the top representative of foreign and security policy. At the meeting, the parties discussed the opportunities for Georgia's integration with the European Union and for strengthening the role of the European Union in a peaceful settlement of Georgia's domestic conflicts.

While in Brussels, the Prime Minister of Georgia also met with Ms. Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the European Commissar for Foreign Relations and European Community Policy. The parties discussed the opportunities for strengthening the relations between Georgia and the European Union. As the European Commissar stated at the meeting with the Georgian Prime Minister, on 27 November the EU Board of Law and Domestic Affairs approved the EC-prepared mandate to kick off negotiations to sign Simplified VISA Regulation and Readmission Agreements with Georgia.

Grigol Mgaloblishvili also met with Mr. Iazek Sariush-Volsky, the Head of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament, Mr. Andris Piebalgs, the European Commissar for Energy, and Ms. Catherine Eshton, the European Commissar for Commerce.

As part of the visit, the Prime Minister of Georgia made a speech on "Georgia's Future together with EU and Nato" in The German Marshall Fund of the United States.
