Prime Minister Puts Forward New Initiative

On 29 November 2008, a statistical system reform concept development working group was set up with the Chancellery of the Government of Georgia under the supervision of Prime Minister Grigol Mgaloblishvili. The goal of the reform is to separate the Department for Statistics from the Ministry of Economic Development and turn it into an independent agency.

The working group will be staffed with external experts of international organizations. The working group will formulate recommendations for towards implementation of the statistical system reform and put forward the reform concept document by the end of January 2009.

At the beginning of the meeting with the working group, Prime Minister of Georgia Grigol Mgaloblishvili thanked the audience for coming, stating that after consultations with experts, civil society and competent agencies; he had made a decision to reform the national statistical system.

"The goal of the reform must be institutional strengthening of the national statistical system, heightening the level of its independence, and improving the reliability and quality of statistical data.

I'd like to thank you for agreeing with me to work in the group. A group of external experts will be set up to develop the National Statistics Center Reform Concept within 2 months. In parallel with working on the concept development, I'd like to ask you to meet with the representatives of the civil society, experts, the Parliament of Georgia to make sure that the reform is subject to public discussion," the Prime Minister of Georgia said.
