Government of Georgia – Appearance 2008

The prime minister of Georgia addressed the population

On August 11, 2008, the Prime Minister of Georgia Vladimer Gurgenidze addressed the population through the Georgian Public Broadcasting:.

The prime minister thanked the population of Georgia for keeping peace and quiet and called everyone to stay in their own homes and wait for further proceedings.

"I would like to extend my gratitude for keeping peace and quiet without any panic or agitation. This is of paramount importance to us. One more time I would like to call you to stay in your own homes and wait for further proceedings.

The president of Georgia spoke to the world leaders and to the high authorities of different countries. I have information that in these days some of them are going to visit our country as a token of solidarity and for extending hand of help to us. But at this stage, to be sincere, we are disappointed because our western partners failed to be actively involved in discharging the situation.

Despite the fact that the capital city as well as other regions are relatively peaceful, in order to avoid any type of agitation or extra tension we have decided to declare Bank Holiday tomorrow which will be the day off. You do know that all businesses have worked in a usual regime during these days and the banks among them too. They were ready to continue their usual work but we decided to take this conclusion.

There no grounds for panic. To our information no trace of movement is observed on behalf of the Russian troops neither to the East nor to other towns of Georgia, except for the towns where the Russians are already deployed. Although they have not yet moved to active actions, to our information, there is no danger of land attack on Tbilisi tonight.

The public establishments will go on working in usual regime and the banks will have one day off and I would like to reiterate that it is only a one day off.

As we have promised, in a permanent regime and every hour, if needed, we will provide you with additional information.

Thank you again for keeping peace and quiet", - the prime minister of Georgia asserted.
