Before the commencement of the Meeting, Prime Minister of Georgia Vladimer Gurgenidze briefly touched upon the results of his 1-2 September visit to Brussels.
He said that the statements that the European Union has made and the integrity that it has shown in expressing its position in connection with the recent development sin Georgia are very important. Not only did it decry the Russian aggression but also expressly supported the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country. This was the most important result of the Brussels summit. Besides, the Prime Minister of Georgia continued, it is very important that the European Union has determined to dispatch civil observers already on this stage that is one of the components of the vigorous efforts made by the European Union and President N. Sarkozy to make sure that the 6-point agreement is fully fulfilled and, as a result, speed up the process of de-occupation of Georgia. The communiqué that has been adopted discusses the prospects of Georgia's closer integration into Georgia. In particular, two main ways of accelerated integration have been singled out: simplification of the VISA system for the citizens of Georgia and achieving a considerable progress in the field of free trade. Naturally, we have a lot of work to do in this area but the statement that is registered in the final communiqué does provide a basis for optimism. We'll continue our active work on the topic. I guess I will have to travel to Brussels on 11 September to get the topic off the ground as soon as possible. The communiqué also speaks about the donors' conference, though its format and dates are not known yet. Consultations on the matter are underway. Meetings will be held in the European Commission as well. The working processes have started there, too. Naturally, it takes both the European Commission and the European Parliament some time to go through all the necessary procedures. In parallel, we are working hard on the avenue of economic aid as well. Our joint press conference with IMF is held at 5:00 p.m. today to discuss the specific details of the IMF's new huge, impressive program. Besides, within the next 24 hours we expect to know the details of a very large-scale economic aid that comes from our biggest friend and partner. Efforts are bent in all directions, have all the reasons for optimism, and the first results will become known to the public at 5:00 p.m. today, the Primer Minister of Georgia said.
