Government of Georgia – Government Meetings 2007 Year

Meeting of September 26, 2007

On September 26, 2007 was held the Meeting of the Government of Georgia. The agenda consisted of 36 items.

Before beginning of the Meeting the Prime Minister of Georgia Zurab Noghaideli informed those attended that in the latest period during his visit in regions one of the most important issues motioned by the population was the firewood provision in winter. We, stated the Prime Minister, proposed a new strategy to issue long-term licenses for use of forest resources. This process has not been yet completed. Therefore today, at the Government Meeting we will pas a decision under which the population, especially in highlands, will get the wood resources under the condition that in no way the people resell the firewood or use it for other purposes.

The Prime Minister ordered to the Ministry of Environment Protection and Department for Regional Affairs of the Chancellery of Government to provide the top control over performance of those decisions according to regions and areas.

One more issue of top importance to be considered within our visit in regions, continued the Prime Minister, is the program for preventive measures to be taken to prevent the expected loss due to disasters, in particular, floods. With this purpose we have purchased for Lentekhi and Tsageri regions the special equipment which will continuously perform preventive operations in order to avoid the loss which occurred in those regions two years ago. The same will be made for Oni and Ambrolauri regions and other highland regions. All this shall be performed with the same approach as in Kakheti, namely, on the river Duruji in Quareli region. There we shall solve the problem which has been unsettled for dozens of years.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister touched the course of vintage in Kakheti. He noted that from the next week the vintage will start in Gurjaani and Telavi regions. The grape harvest is very large, about 200-210 thousand tons. At present the main task is to store the grape harvest without losses and this task is under the steadfast control of the special headquarters headed by the minister for agriculture of Georgia Petre Tsiskarishvili. The total infrastructure is ready, the state program of additional purchase of grapes for distillery of spirit, stated the Prime Minister and expressed his satisfaction about the activity of Rtveli-2007 headquarters.
