Meeting of the 6 October 2006

The Meeting of the Government of Georgia was held on 6 October 2006. The Agenda consisted of 27 items.

At the commencement of the Meeting, Prime Minister of Georgia Zurab Noghaideli congratulated the Government members on the success in the local self-government elections. The Prime Minister said: the elections and the procedures were evaluated to be a success by the observers, in the opinion of whose managers, they witnessed the greatest progress in the process of conducting the elections.

We have made another stride towards building democracy in Georgia, the Prime Minister of Georgia said, and congratulated the President of Georgia and the people of Georgia on the great success. In fact, these have been the first elections in the history of an independent Georgia where the heads of local executive authorities will be elected by the Council (Sakrebulo), as a result of which the relation between the central and local authorities will enter a new phase. This victory is very important in terms of successful continuation of reforms and development of economy in Georgia, and the support that we gained from the public yesterday puts on us greater responsibility, the Prime Minister added.

The Prime Minister of Georgia briefed those present at the Meeting that the inflation rate in the nine months of the year had reached only 6%. Now the objective of the Government and National Bank of Georgia was to make concerted efforts to keep the single-digit inflation rate to the end of the year.
The Prime Minister of Georgia also noted that compared with the similar period of the previous year, the declared turnover of companies over the last nine months increased by 30,1% and the wage fund of private companies - by 36,9%. This speaks for a stable growth in the Georgian economy. The Prime Minister of Georgia expressed hope that the country would be politically and economically stronger to face the sanctions that Russia had imposed on Georgia.
