Government of Georgia – Government Meetings 2006 Year

Meeting of the 13 September 2006

The Meeting of the Government of Georgia was held on 13 September 2006. The Agenda consisted of 17 items.

At the beginning, Prime Minister of Georgia Zurab Noghaideli focused the attention of the audience on the report of International Finance Corporation of World Bank, where Georgia is a number 1 reformer country in the second half of 1005 and first half of 2006, i.e. in the last twelve months. The Prime Minister of Georgia said: last year we set the goal to be among the 50 countries with favourable business development environment. This goal, too, has been reached and the country has jumped up from the 112th to the 37th place. Now our goal is to establish a place among the 25 countries. It will be a challenge to get in the list of these countries. In the past few years only the three Baltic republics were able to do it. This is an ambitious goal but we can achieve it. Then the Prime Minister of Georgia assigned the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Finance and State Minister of Georgia Kakha Bendukidze to identify the steps to be made to that end. The Prime Minister said: especially so when certain steps have already been made and works are in progress to develop a liberal legislative base encouraging business development. This must be done not to be called a reformer but to further improve the investment climate in our country. The amount of foreign investments in Georgia is estimated to reach 1.5 billion US dollars that is a precondition for further development of the economy and continuation of the process of employment of our citizens.

The Prime Minister of Georgia expressed satisfaction with the works being performed in Kodori Gorge, and assigned Jambul Bakuradze, the Deputy Head of the Chancellery of the Government of Georgia, the Head of the Department for Regional Affairs, to take effective measures to make sure that the supply of the population in Kodori Gorge with foodstuffs and other daily necessities is completed before October sets in.
