Government of Georgia – Government Meetings 2006 Year

Meeting of the 22 February 2006

The Meeting of the Government of Georgia was held on 22 February 2006. The Agenda consisted of 42 items.

Before the beginning of the Meeting, the Prime Minister of Georgia said: I'd like to draw the attention of the Government members to the unilateral peace initiative we had launched to demilitarize Tskhinvali Region and alleviate tension in the Region. We had expected that the other parties involved in the negotiations would have followed suit.

It is very important that our steps evoked considerable support from the US Government and the European Union. In fact, we can say that we enjoyed unprecedented support, particularly from the European Union. This repeatedly attests to the fact that the course that we had taken is right and strong. We are pressing ahead with the OSCE-approved peace plan and the steps that we made had been provided by this plan but they were supposed to have been agreed and joint steps. Nevertheless, we thought it advisable to take these steps unilaterally.

Considering it all, the decision of Russia to postpone my working visit came as a surprise. We believe that where there is a problem, it can be resolved only through a dialogue.
At this point, we are concentrating on New-York Investment Conference where Georgian to-be-privatized facilities will be presented in three areas: energy, transport and communication. Our objective is to pursue the clear course we have taken.
