Prime-Minister’s visit to Brussels

The Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri is on his working visit in Brussels.

04 March, Nika Gilauri met the Head of Foreign Affairs Committee of European Parliament Mr. Jacek Saryusz - Wolski. As the Prime Minister stated: "We have discussed different topics, including EU assistance rendered to Georgia. This assistance is a part of those 4.5 billion dollars which we agreed on. They will continue and facilitate this assistance".

At the meeting they also discussed the work of European monitors in Georgia. According to the EU Commissar Saryusz - Wolski, Georgia seeks to restore and rehabilitate economic and political stability, despite the undesirable situation caused by Russia's invasion of the country. The Government of Georgia still endeavors to attract investments from donor states and the situation in the country is as stable as it should be in a post-war country affected by economic slump. The EU Observers Mission provides for maintenance of peaceful and stable situation in the region. As yet they fail to enter the occupied territories. Brussels believes that the agreement reached in August and September will be absolutely fulfilled.

The same day the Prime Minister met the Secretary in General of the EU Committee, Higher Representative of Foreign and Safety Policy Mr. Javier Solana. At the meeting they talked about the assistance provided by the EU for the post-war rehabilitation, simplification of visa regime and presence of the EU Monitoring Mission representatives.

After the meeting with the Secretary in General of the EU Nika Gilauri stated: "Mr. Solana supports and says that this is a successful project. Much must be done to make it eventually successful and fulfill the EU Mission Mandate in full. Notwithstanding this fact this project will be continued and we'll sign prolongation of monitoring mission in Georgia."

05 March, the Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri met the EU Commissar for Foreign Affairs and European Neighborhood Policy Ms. Benita Ferrero-Waldner. According to the Prime Minister, at the meeting with Ms. Benita Ferrero-Waldner they talked about the Donors Conference in Brussels. "Please note that the Conference arranged in Brussels finished with success. Not only the Conference was a success but also the period following the end thereof, as the promises have been fulfilled. Funds are oriented on Georgia and today the donors funds have become an important part of Georgia's economy, said Nika Gilauri.

In turn, the EU Commissar Benita Ferrero-Waldner stated that the EU supported the territorial integrity of Georgia. "We do not recognize the independence of the South Ossetia and Abkhazia as the said two regions are a part of Georgia." "We want to continue political and practical support of Georgia as to enable it respond to serious challenges. Of course, we still support Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity," he added.

Within the framework of the visit, the Georgian Prime Minister also met the President of European Parliament Hans-Gert Pőttering, the EU Commissar for energy Andris Piebalgs and the Belgium Prime Minister Herman van Rompuy.
