On February 25, 2011, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Nika Gilauri, met the descendants of members of the first government of Georgia in the former Young Students' Palace. As Nika Gilauri pointed out at the meeting, it was in this building, which from now on will be called the Palace of the First Republic of Georgia, that "the independence of the contemporary Georgia was declared. It was this building in which the Parliament sat and the main decisions on the governance of the country were made in the years 1918-1921."

"This year, it is the first time that we officially mark the date of Georgia's occupation. February 25 is one of the most tragic dates in Georgia's history. It was on this day that the Soviet Russia invaded Georgia and captured and conquered Tbilisi.

We may not know a lot of things about that period, but at that time, Georgia was a full-fledged and democratic state. Georgia had been recognized by a lot of countries, including by Russia. In spite of this, in 1921 Georgia was annexed. It was in this building that the first Parliament of the contemporary Georgian state sat. It was in this building that Georgia's independence was acknowledged and declared. We have decided to inaugurate a memorial plaque and rename this building on this day. From now on, this building is called the Palace of the First Republic of Georgia.
