Government of Georgia – Appearance 2018

Prime Minister’s Statement Print Version

2018-02-23

Firstly, I would like to express my deepest sorrow upon the gravest tragedy that took place today in Tskhinvali. I extend my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Archil Tatunashvili.

On February 22, the occupation regime unlawfully detained our three citizens in Akhalgori: Archil Tatunashvili, Levan Kutashvili, and Ioseb Pavliashvili. As it became known today, Archil Tatunashvili died in unclear circumstances.

This most grievous fact was immediately communicated to the EU Monitoring Mission and the Co-Chairs of the Geneva International Discussions.

The Ministry of Interior of Georgia launched an investigation into unlawful detention and premeditated murder. Given the gravity and importance of this issue, we believe it necessary to ensure decisive response, with the active involvement of international organizations, and to identify promptly the circumstances surrounding our citizens' arrest and the death of Archil Tatunashvili, so that all perpetrators may be held responsible.

In addition, it is imperative to establish international human rights and security mechanisms on the ground as soon as possible in order to ensure adequate response to this and similar blatant violations.

We demand-and we will use every international tool to the end-the immediate release of Levan Kutashvili and Ioseb Pavliashvili who are unlawfully detained in Akhalgori.
