Main directions of strategic partnership between Georgia and United States of America (USA) were discussed by Mamuka Bakhtadze, Prime Minister of Georgia and Delegation of Democratic Partnership Committee of the US House of Representatives at a meeting held today at the Government Administration of Georgia.

Focus was made on the bilateral relations, which are at all time high in the opinion of the Prime Minister of Georgia. Need to advance the economic cooperation to make it compatible with high level political relations between USA and Georgia has been underlined. Within this context, political and economic aspects of the potential Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between USA and Georgia were discussed, along with the significance of continued negotiations towards this end, which will lead to the increased interest of US companies towards Georgia and facilitation of bilateral trade.

Amendments to the Constitution of Georgia were also reviewed at the meeting, as they have led to the transformation of the country to the model of parliamentary governance and increased accountability of the Government towards the Parliament of Georgia. Progress achieved towards democratic institutional building in Georgia has been underlined.

Focus was made on the current reforms implemented in Georgia, including those in the justice and education systems.

Current state of affairs and challenges witnessed in the occupied territories of Georgia were also discussed at the meeting. Prime Minister of Georgia shared information with the visiting delegation on the peace initiative branded as a Step Towards Better Future, which is aimed at the improvement of humanitarian and socio-economic position of people living within the occupied territories of Georgia.

Bipartisan Delegation of the House of Representatives from US Congress headed by David Price, Congressman of the Democratic Partnership Committee arrived in Georgia on April 15, 2019. Delegation is composed of Vern Buchenan, Co-Chair and Congressman; Members of Congress: Dina Titus, Michael Conaway, Gerry Connolly, Adrian Smith, Barbara Lee and Terri Sewell.
