Economic Council Meeting Gets Held and Led by the Prime Minister of Georgia Print Version

Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia held and led a meeting of the Economic Council of Georgia. Main topics of discussion were the current and anticipated large infrastructure projects, including the Railway Modernization, Deep-Sea Anaklia Port and Development of Airports in Georgia.

When referring to the Anaklia Project, it was noted that construction works will commence in 2024. A partner from the private sector will also be identified and contracted. Construction of the port infrastructure will commence in Anaklia in 2024. A process for the selection of an investor is actively pursued at present. In the context of co-participation from the state, it will develop the deep-sea infrastructure in Anaklia.

As for the project aimed at the development of airports in Georgia, a new initiative will be launched in 2024 to develop an international airport in Tbilisi. While discussing the topic, it was highlighted that the new airport will have a transit and logistic function with state-of-the-art passenger and cargo terminals, to make sure that air carriers of any size and type - be that passenger or cargo - be admitted and serviced.

Discussion also touched upon the construction of a new passenger terminal in Telavi, which will service about 50 000 passengers a year. When discussing the plan, it was noted that a runway will be fully upgraded and extended to 1700 meters. Sophisticated navigation systems will be installed and a new navigation tower will be built. Also, the interior and exterior infrastructure of the airport will be fully upgraded. New parking lots will be arranged, along with comfortable spaces for passengers. Telavi Airport will be admitting its first passengers in 2024. According to the preliminary assumptions, 25 MLN GEL will be needed as an investment for its development.

Focus was made on the measures planned at the Kutaisi International Airport and it was highlighted that a 3.5 kilometer-long, wide runway will be built to enable the service of large size air carriers. It will allow for more flights to be admitted and cargo flights will be operated without restrictions. Project planning phase is scheduled to be completed in December 2023, followed by the actual construction works soon after.

Members of the Government of Georgia also discussed the Railway Modernization Project, Reform of the railway transportation sector will be completed in 2024 and a system of European model will be introduced to increase the efficiency of the sector, reduce the time of travel and associated costs. Annual throughput of the railway system will be increased from 28 to 48 million tons.


Aftermath of the natural disaster occurring in the west part of Georgia was also discussed at the meeting of the Economic Council today. It was noted that damages will be calculated in detail and infrastructure will be recovered in the most efficient manner. According to Irakli Garibashvili, no family will be left without care and support from the State.
