Meeting of July 11, 2007

On July 11, 2007 was held the Meeting of the Government of Georgia. The agenda consisted of 21 items.

On July 10 the Prime Minister of Georgia Zurab Noghaideli visited the Kvemo Kartli region where he inspected new enterprises. The Prime Minister of Georgia shared his impressions with the members of the Government. In particular, he noted that in the nearest future in Marneuli will be commissioned a new processing factory where 80-85 persons will be employed. This enterprise will process mainly tomatoes, though it may also process fruits and other vegetables. This enterprise will be very important as it is closely related to the agrarian sector which includes about 10000 households in Marneuli region. Within the next two weeks we will discuss the measures to be taken in the agrarian and processing sectors and will make proper decisions. It shall be not some artificial measures but the economic promotion of those fields, - the Prime Minister of Georgia stated.

He talked about the Rustavi metallurgical enterprise and noted that the enterprise which two years ago had been on the edge of destruction was put into operation and today 1300 our citizens are employed there. In the end of 2009 where will be completed the investment cycle with the total amount of 250-300 million USD, at the enterprise will work 6000-6500 persons. In autumn the metallurgical enterprise will begin the production of building bars. With this the Georgian economy will add 60 million USD export or import replacement potential that is very important for us.

The Georgian Prime Minister also talked about Rustavi cement and noted that the enterprise is in process of attraction of large investment amounts by Heidelberg Cement, one of the largest cement manufacturers worldwide. He said that the investments in the Georgian Cement enterprises take place in two directions. The first direction is implementation of investments for establishment of new enterprises. As a result of this production of cement in Georgia will attain to two million tons and the national export potential will increase by 70 million USD, that also will be of great importance. The second direction provides the investing in the existing enterprises as a result of which shall be solved the problem of exhaustions which causes trouble for Rustavi and Kaspi residents. He asked the minister for environment protection and natural resources of Georgia Davit Tkeshelashvili to inform the members of Government about the achieved agreements and the obtained results.

The minister for environment protection and natural resources of Georgia Davit Tkeshelashvili informed the members of the Government that as a result of the active work with the representatives of Heidelberg cement was achieved the agreement that in September at Rustavi and Kaspi cement plants will start the installation of new filters which will reduce ten-times the exhaustion of hazardous substances and by June 2008 this problem will not exist more. The minister noted that today the total production cycle shall be replaced that will radically change the ecological situation in Kaspi and Rustavi. In September between the Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources and Heidelberg Cement Georgia will be executed the memorandum where will be correctly described the liabilities of the investor for improvement of the ecological situation and what measures will be implemented in concrete terms.

The minister for environment protection and natural resources of Georgia Davit Tkeshelashvili underlined once more that in the year 2008 that very difficult situation which had been created in Rustavi and especially in Kaspi for many years will be radically changed and the problem will be practically solved.
