Meeting of January 31, 2007

On January 31, 2007 was held the Meeting of the Government of Georgia attended by the President of Georgia. . The agenda included 27 items.

Upon the beginning of the Meeting The Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili addressed to those attained. In his statement the Georgian President highlighted the burning issues of the day.

In connection with the supply of natural gas he noted that today the country is supplied with gas from two sources. Partly it is Azerbaijan gas which share will be increased in future and Russian gas which we are receiving at the political price of 235 USD. This political price was estimated to cause detriment to every Georgian family.

Therefore, the goal of the Government of Georgia is to do everything in order to minimize the effect of this detriment. The President said that in winter the gas price shall not grow as those are difficult months especially for socially vulnerable families and ordered to the energy ministry of Georgia to take effective measures in order to increase the share of cheap gas in the energy balance and to ensure that the heat stations use less gas. In addition, the Government of Georgia shall determine the sums which shall be paid in advance in order to minimize the effect of the increased cost of Russian gas on the population.

The Georgian President highlighted the issue of maintenance of the state staff and spending of budgetary funds by the state officials and noted that the healthy effect of our democracy is the decision of some top officials on resignation. Such decision shall be full of sense of responsibility but at the same time the Government shall establish some criteria according to which the officials will have such conditions for activity and movement which will be comparable with the European officials. At the same time shall be excluded the possibility of luxury and extra comfort. He ordered to the Prime Minister of Georgia to provide the direct supervision over establishment of those criteria, drafting of respective recommendations and instructions.

To the question of the Georgian President how the order on arrangement of the center in the village Tamarasheni is performed the Georgian economic development minister Giorgi Arveladze answered that the construction will be finished in April and the village will get the high standard cinema, recreation center which will serve more than 200 young people. In connection with this the Georgian President stated that some times ago he visited Tamarasheni and Kurta and is going to visit those villages often. The life and work of those residents is equal to heroism. They did not leave their houses in the gravest years of the civil conflict, have overcome it and reveal the wonderful examples of the civil firmness. The plans of what shall be done there is only a part of the total activity. He ordered to the Government of Georgia to assign to every family the single allowance in amount of 100 GEL. He also said that there shall be continued and finished in spring and summer the construction, lighting, school equipment, hospital repair, sport ground arranging operations. There shall be developed the special program for improvement of conditions for teachers, shall be appointed a special bus from Tamarasheni to Eredvi which will run by a bypass road and will carry the population free of charge.

The Georgian President stated that he will provide the personal control over the activity for improvement of stated in the Big and Large Liakhvi gorges and called the members of the Government to do the same in their spheres. This is the most sensible region of Georgia and some tens thousand residents need the special support as we need their support. We shall provide this support in order to establish peace in that region and exclude any violation of peaceful situation, development of separatist tendencies there. We have the resources for this, - stated the Georgian President.
