Government of Georgia – Government Meetings 2011 Year

Meeting of the Government as of June 27, 2011

Meeting of the Government as of June 27, 2011 On June 27, 2011 was held the meeting of the Georgian Government. The agenda included 31 items.

Before the meeting started, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Nika Gilauri, talked about several issues. We present the Prime Minister's speech:

"Good day. Before we start the government meeting, I would like to give the public several pieces of information.

The first one deals with macroeconomic parameters. We have already had the data of the first quarter and the export of second quarter. These are quite hopeful and very positive economic figures. I would like to mention the index of so called FDI (Foreign Direct Investment), which amounted to USD 172-173 million for the first quarter that is 2.3 times higher in comparison with that of the first quarter of the last year. This is one of the main driving forces of economic activity and a very positive figure.

As for the export in May, the figure amounts to USD 199 million. This is a record high figure. Georgia has never had such a high indicator of export as that in May of this year. This is hopeful as well and indicates that the economic activity of the country moves forward.

As for the current issues, I would like to mention the rehabilitation of the East-West Highway. It is already finished and was opened yesterday. I would like to thank absolutely everyone, who worked there during these days. They have really done their best. Several private companies were represented there. Certainly, employees of the Ministry were there for 24 hours. The work which was to be done in 2-3 weeks, was accomplished in a week and I would like to thank everyone, and first of all, Ramaz.

Ramaz, is everything completely restored?"

Ramaz Nikolaishvili: "I would like to tell you that yesterday, at 7 o'clock, the highway was completely loaded. It is possible to drive to both directions without any problem. Part of works is still under way, although, the populations will no feel this. I would like to tell you that we are adjusting the river gorge all to pieces in order to avoid the similar cases in the future. Apart from this, we continue to reinforce the critical sites. For the purpose of prevention, we asked geologists to study the situation."

Nika Gilauri: "Finally, I would like to draw the public's attention to one of the issues of the Ministry of Education, concerning distribution of books to children form poor families free of charge. We have had a similar program earlier, but now we have broadened the program. Dima, please, tell the public a few words about the content of this program."

Dimitri Shashkin: "Every socially unprotected child will receive manuals at school from the Government of Georgia, free of charge, on September 15. Up to GEL 8 million has already been allocated; thus, we will purchase 800,000 books. Every child from 1st to 6th grade having scores less than 70,000, and from 7th to 12th grade having scores less than 57,000 well receive the books. By means of this, everyone will be able to obtain a high quality education, regardless of the income of parents of these children."
