The Municipal Development Fund of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia has launched urban upgrading in the central section of the village of Velistsikhe, Gurjaani Municipality. Today, the Head of Government visited the site together with Cabinet members.

Almost 60 buildings, the square in front of the theater, and the main street in the village central will be rehabilitated, and the adjacent park will be landscaped. The road and drainage systems will be installed, and a water filtering facility will be built. The project is implemented with 30 million GEL financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The rehabilitation project also includes the reconstruction of the Velistsikhe Theater's façade and first floor. Vaso Godziashvili Velistsikhe Theater, with its history spanning 130 years, staged performances as early as the second half of the 19th century.

According to the Head of Government, the buildings in the village of Velistsikhe boast special architecture, and their upgrading will enrich the Kakheti Region with yet another historically and architecturally valuable tourist destination poised to offer Velistsikhe's population new economic opportunities.

The Head of Government also met with the residents of Velistsikhe who thanked the Prime Minister for implementing important projects in their village and the region in general, also discussing plans for the future.

The urban upgrading work in the village of Velistsikhe, launched in late January 2022, will be finalized in the summer of 2023.

On his visit to the site, the Head of Government was accompanied by Vice Prime Minister/Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili, Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Irakli Karseladze, Minister of Education and Science Mikheil Chkhenkeli, Minister of Environmental Protection Otar Shamugia, Head of the State Security Service Grigol Liluashvili, Head of the Government Administration's Regional Liaison Department Leri Barnabishvili, Gurjaani Mayor Zurab Utiashvili, Gurjaani Majoritarian MP Davit Songhulashvili, and other Members of Parliament, also CEO of the Municipal Development Fund Davit Tabidze, and ADB Country Director in Georgia Shane Rosenthal.
