Today, the Governmental Coordination Commission for Census of Georgia chaired by the Prime Minister was convened for the first time at the Government Administration.

During the meeting, the National Statistics Office of Georgia submitted for the commission's approval the Program for the 2024 Census encompassing the basic principles of and methodological and organizational issues pertaining to the census.

The program sets late 2024 as the date for the census.

The census will yield the latest data on the size of the population, its composition by sex and age, employment, education, health, and residence.

On the Governmental Coordination Commission's decision, a census of agriculture will also be carried out alongside the population census to collect information about the agricultural activities of households along with social and demographic data.

The Governmental Coordination Commission for Census, established by authority of the Georgian Government's ordinance, consists of the heads of state institutions and representatives of international organizations. The country's last census was conducted in 2014.

On June 10, 2015, the United Nations Economic and Social Council adopted a resolution obligating member states to conduct at least one smaller census under "the 2020 round of population and housing censuses" based on international and regional recommendations. A period between 2015 and 2024 has been set as the 2020 world round of population and housing censuses.
