Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze familiarized himself with restoration work at the Alaverdi Cathedral in the wake of the recent natural disaster.

General Director of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation Nikoloz Aznaurashvili and Metropolitan/Abba Davit of Alaverdi briefed the Head of Government in detail about the situation in the monastery complex.

Based on an agreement between the Alaverdi Diocese and the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia, scaffolding is being set up around the cathedral's dome at this point, to be followed by specialists restoring the dome.

The damage caused by the recent natural disaster has been assessed by a group of restoration architects and conservation specialists from the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation. The recent severe windstorm removed the dome's copper surface, also damaging the tiled roofing, breaking the windows in the western side of the cathedral and around the dome, destroying the copper roof of the bell-tower and the roof of the episcopal residence, collapsing the residence's balcony, removing the cross from the cathedral's dome, and causing disruptions in the adjacent territory's infrastructure.

The Alaverdi Cathedral is the tallest church among the monuments of cultural heritage in Georgia.
